family-owned business around succession issues. Not only was the
business at risk, but family relationships were as well. Everyone
was pulling in di;erent directions, including the lawyers who
seemed to be making things more complex than they had to be. Of
course, family dynamics were also at play, with spouses, siblings,
and a parent all having opinions. In short, it was a mess.
This participant said if he didn’t fully own his power, he would
have been whipped around by all the intense emotions and
disputes. He took a di;erent approach and stepped forward as a
leader. He realized that he needed to come from a place of great
strength if he was to make any di;erence. As a result, everyone
involved started to listen to him. He was able to guide them to a
collaborative solution - all because he was willing to own his power.
As he reports, they are a family again and he has a great sense of
accomplishment.
Moving Forward
The first step in beginning to apply these guiding principles so that
you can personally realize the fundamental truths for yourself is to
step back and observe how you have been operating in the world.
We have a fixed view of the world, our practice, partners, clients,
and so on. We’re always trying to make things fit and work in our
world, which is quite understandable.

What’s di;cult to see, especially in the beginning, is that the world
we are living in, our own world, is in many ways a reflection of our
inner world, comprised mainly of our beliefs and points of view.
It’s just a mental model that needs to be observed and released to
allow for a new model to emerge. Once we realize the changes we
need to make are found inside ourselves, not outside, that’s when
things start to shift. This is not an understanding to be arrived at
intellectually, but only experientially. To some, it may seem illogical.
