STORAGE SOLUTIONS
While most accounting offices
prefer to store their files on their
own servers for faster and more
economical searches, retrieval
and security, the buzz of the
future is all about Software-as-a-Service and cloud computing.
While there is no question that
cloud computing offers benefits,
those benefits come with some
interesting challenges.
For one, it is up to the
accounting office to ensure
security. Who will own the
data stored there, particularly
if the “cloud” data is housed in
countries that have different laws
covering security, ownership
and copyrights? In the event of a
problem, who is responsible for
ensuring the integrity of the data?
The cloud may be the future,
but there are many questions to be
asked before simply adopting this
new architecture.
And there are a host of
new technologies, new products
and new issues beyond that: The
use of mobile phones and tablet
computers. The needs of “road
warriors” working in multiple
locations. The technologies of
social networking, Twitter, and
conversion of files to work on
multiple platforms. The use of
CRM and ERP software to offset
the need for specific document
management systems. And, of
course, the question of whether
it makes more sense to buy a
turnkey content management
system, or buy the “best of breed”
solutions in each of the three
primary areas of scanner, software
and storage.
