As always, we ask the candidates for the Top 100 to name the three people they think are the most in;uential in accounting. ;e answers, re;ecting the ever-increasing scope and reach of the profession, ranged widely, with the 122 candidates responding nam- ing a total of 124 in;uences. Among all that diversity, though, one trend continues: the prominence of AICPA president Barry Melancon. While they may not all know exactly how to spell his name (it has neither an “i” nor an “s”), almost half of respondents named him, roughly three times as many as cited his nearest competitors, SEC chair Mary Schapiro and FASB chair Leslie Seidman, who are themselves über-in;uential. Institute personnel did particularly well this year, with Jim Metzler, Mark Koziel and Erik Asgeirsson all garnering signi;cant mentions, but while the usual slate of regulators received their due, two government ;gures saw their support dwindle: Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner were both considered signi;cantly less in;uential on the profes- sion this year than last.
